Another way to become a local art collector...

Whether you are redecorating a room or two in your home or just have a blank wall that needs a focus, buying local art, and becoming a collector, has some wonderful benefits for all involved.  But how to afford it?

I use the word 'local', because what I am going to suggest requires that you establish a connection, a repore with the artist, which is harder to do when you are purchasing artwork online, never to meet the creative energy behind it.  

Becoming a modest art collector, began for me while being employed as an art framer and during my tenure as joint-owner of a thriving art gallery. Also as an artist, I made friends with other artists and wanted to own and support their endeavors.  

In order to afford purchasing their work, I was offered an opportunity to pay for my choices on a monthly basis.  I would select a piece, pay a deposit, take it home, make sure it fit the space in design, color & size then give the 'OK' to a signed pre-agreed contract to pay a specific amount for 2 or 3 months until the purchase was complete.  It was a win-win situation for us both.  I had lovely artwork on the walls, decorating my home, and the artist did not have to store the work, eliminating a space issue, or use up their valuable time trying to exhibit or market the work.

Have you been exposed to inspiring artwork of an up and coming local artist, and wish you could own a piece or two?  Perhaps you are planning to redecorate and would love something new, large and fairly expensive?  Contacting an artist directly is the way to initiate this possibility.  Ask if they sell only thru galleries & if not, make an appointment to see their studio work.  When selecting the piece you wish to own, ask about payment options.  

Speaking personally, I love to know that my artwork is going to a good caring home, sooner rather than later.  That it is being thoroughly enjoyed by others more than just myself -  and I look for agreeable ways to make that a realization.

Wabi Sabi

      I am very excited by a new series that I have started, entitled Wabi Sabi, in which I am exploring a mid century modern minimalistic approach.  I am choosing to not only moderate and define my shapes, but to also embrace a simple aesthetic of mark making that grows stronger when inessentials are eliminated.  

I have started off with small pieces, one a day, that I am posting on Instagram and my website.  They are ideal for a small wall, table, or bookcase, arrive on your doorstep matted, and ready for a 12" X 12" frame.  The colors that I am using are current with what's being designed for a newly decorated Spring home! Soft pastels, airy neutrals or soothing blues and greens.  I would love for you to consider a piece for your lovely home or office and enjoy the simplicity and calm of less is more.

Now to the title of my series........Wabi Sabi.  I have included an explanation of what it means (below) but to keep it simple, basically it means 'embrace imperfection'.  Pared down to it's barest essence, wabi-wabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature. Perfectly imperfect or could it be imperfectly perfect?  I find that to be something I continually strive to accept, as my nature is to aim for perfection and in doing so, I lose sight of the spontaneous, fluid and perfectly imperfect moments. 

So here's to more Wabi Sabi in my art and in your lives!

"Fluidity 26"

It makes sense for an artist to paint with colors that they love.  Right? 

In my case my home, studio, and clothing are included in that statement 

and whether its pillows, clothing, artwork or tablecloths....they all go together.  

So I was very pleased after redecorating my home recently 

to find that my new addition of soft grey and indigo 

to my home & palette, were the current colors of 

Fixer Upper, Pottery Barn, Target, Crate & Barrel and Kate Spade!  

It made it so easy to go and spend money!  

It also means that if you are shopping there too,

my artwork will coordinate perfectly on your walls.  TaDa!!

Had fun being a bit messy with this one.  

Individually, the colors are glorious, but together the green is not my first choice.  

As someone smart once said 

"There is no bad color -  just a great color in the wrong place".

"Fluidity 23"

In Florida, this is our "Season" - when the weather is milder than anywhere else 

and we are fortunate to enjoy lovely sunny days without melting.  

But it also means our restaurants, roads and stores are packed with tourists, 

and it takes a lot longer to accomplish anything.  

Plus, it's when family & friends visit and marriages take place.  

All of which has been cutting in to painting time in my studio!

However, I have managed to produce a few things to post 

and here is Day 23 of my Fluidity Series.
